Saudi Arabia’s sports calendar is gaining another major international event. On May 15 and 16, 2026, Riyadh will host the inaugural Saudi Athletics Grand Prix – Riyadh 2026 at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University Stadium. The event marks a new step for athletics in the Kingdom, bringing together international athletes, competitive track and field events, and a wider vision for the future of Saudi sport.

The Saudi Athletics Federation announced the launch of the Grand Prix as part of its efforts to strengthen the Kingdom’s presence in global athletics. The event is expected to attract between 200 and 300 athletes from more than 50 countries, with competitors taking part in 31 men’s and women’s track and field events.

A New Stage for Athletics in Saudi Arabia

The Saudi Athletics Grand Prix is not just another sporting event. It represents a more focused investment in one of the world’s oldest and most universal sports. Athletics is built on speed, strength, endurance, and precision. It includes races, jumps, throws, and combined events that test the complete ability of an athlete. By bringing this level of competition to Riyadh, Saudi Arabia is giving local fans the chance to experience international athletics up close, while also giving Saudi athletes more exposure to global standards.

The event will open with a World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze-level meeting, followed by the International Challenge Meeting. This structure gives the Grand Prix international sporting weight and positions Riyadh as a serious host for competitive athletics.

More Than 50 Countries in Riyadh

One of the strongest parts of the event is its international participation. With athletes expected from more than 50 countries, the Grand Prix will bring a global sporting atmosphere to Riyadh. For Saudi Arabia, this matters on more than one level. It gives the Kingdom another opportunity to host athletes, coaches, federations, and spectators from around the world. It also reflects the country’s growing ability to organize events across different sports, not only football, motorsport, boxing, or golf.

A Milestone for Saudi Athletics

The 2026 Grand Prix also arrives at an important moment for Saudi athletics. According to the Saudi Athletics Federation, the event coincides with the 63rd anniversary of Saudi athletics, making it both a celebration of history and a signal of future ambition. For decades, Saudi athletes have represented the Kingdom in regional, continental, and international competitions. Now, the focus is expanding from participation to ecosystem building. Hosting events like the Saudi Athletics Grand Prix can help create stronger pathways for athletes, better public awareness, and more professional opportunities around the sport.

It also supports the wider national direction of growing sports participation, improving quality of life, and positioning Saudi Arabia as a global destination for major events under Vision 2030.

A Step Toward the Saudi Elite Athletics League

The Grand Prix is also connected to a larger plan. It is expected to serve as a key step toward the launch of the Saudi Elite Athletics League, scheduled for 2027. This is important because a single event can create excitement, but a league can create continuity. A league gives athletes regular competition. It gives fans a reason to follow the sport across a season. It gives sponsors, broadcasters, clubs, and organizers a clearer structure to support.

If developed well, the Saudi Elite Athletics League could become an important platform for discovering and developing Saudi talent. It could also help athletics become more visible in schools, universities, clubs, and community sports programs.

Riyadh as a Growing Sports Capital

Hosting the Grand Prix at Princess Nourah bint Abdulrahman University Stadium also reflects Riyadh’s expanding role as a sports destination. The capital has become a central stage for major events, from football and combat sports to running, esports, and large-scale international competitions.

The Saudi Athletics Grand Prix adds a new kind of energy to that calendar. It brings the rhythm of the track, the drama of the finish line, and the intensity of field events into the city’s growing sports scene.

A New Beginning for Track and Field in the Kingdom

The first edition of the Saudi Athletics Grand Prix is more than a two-day competition. It is a statement about where Saudi athletics is heading. With international athletes, men’s and women’s competitions, World Athletics-level structure, and a link to the future Saudi Elite Athletics League, the event has the potential to become a foundation for something bigger.

For Riyadh, it is another major event. For Saudi athletics, it may become a turning point. And for the next generation of athletes in the Kingdom, it could be a reminder that the track is now closer than ever.
